Under current government proposals, the statutory retirement age will increase from 66 to 67 between 2026 and 2028.

A further increase in the retirement age threshold is expected before 2048 at the latest.

These changes are based on government expectations for life expectancy in the UK.

As the cost of living crisis continues and bills rise, many Britons will be looking for ways to save a little extra cash.

Some people in England may be able to travel for free in their area before the statutory retirement age.


This “freebie” is also available for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Additionally, some Universal Credit applicants may qualify for half-price bus and train travel.

An estimated 15 million people in the UK are struggling to pay rising energy bills as well as rising food and fuel prices, according to research by the charity StepChange.

The charity spoke to 5,000 Britons and found one in three are struggling with the cost of living crisis.

There has arguably never been a more important time for people to check that they are receiving all the financial assistance to which they are entitled.

As well as a free bus pass, other benefits may be available to Brits, such as a free TV license, free NHS prescriptions and help with energy bills.

This help is available to some Universal Credit, Pension Credit and Tax Credit applicants.
