Mr Ayles said: “These are all APP scams, where victims were tricked into sending money from their bank accounts to something they thought was legit but turned out to be a scam.

“In these cases, their banks have let them down terribly, either by not questioning the huge payments at all or having a very poor conversation that failed to protect them.”

The scam expert said investment scams are a very common scheme used by fraudsters.

Mr Ayles said: “Be extremely careful if someone asks you to send money through a cryptocurrency wallet.

“The number one fraud trend right now is scammers tricking people into making fake investments and telling them to create a cryptocurrency wallet to send money to.

“Once money is sent via cryptocurrency, it is highly unlikely that it can ever be returned.”
