The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday urged the Center to advance the purchase of paddy by one month, to September 1, 2022, instead of October 1, 2022, to safeguard the interests of farmers in Tamil Nadu.
The state government believes that as Tamil Nadu has had a favorable agricultural season this year, and if the Center orders to procure paddy from September 1, it would greatly help farmers in Tamil Nadu to get a price. remunerative for the paddy and realize the benefits of increased MSP. for the 2022 kharif marketing season.
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Stalin, requested to give appropriate instructions to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare to advance the purchase of paddy from ‘a month.
Normally, the paddy harvesting season in late September or early October would coincide with the southwest and northeast monsoon, resulting in yield loss or massive crop damage due to flooding during cyclones. But, this year, due to measures taken by the state government, farmers are confident of harvesting their Kuruvai paddy from the last week of August 2022.
“The new MSP for Kharif Marketing Season (KMS), 2022 would be applicable from 1 October. from Kuruvai starts from the last week of August itself. I request that proper instructions be kindly issued to advance the purchase of paddy by one month, till September 1, 2022,” he said.
For the first time since independence, Mettur Reservoir was opened for cultivation of Kuruvai paddy on May 24, 2022, ahead of the conventional date of June 12. Due to the judicious use of irrigation water in the last paddy season, and due to rains, the storage position of the Mettur reservoir is quite comfortable this year, he pointed out in the letter.
The state government had itself issued orders on April 8, 2022 to undertake the degritting works of the main canals and sub-canals over a length of 4,964.11 km in the Cauvery delta districts at an expenditure of Rs 80 crore and sanctioned a package of agricultural inputs worth Rs 61 crore to farmers in the area.
Quality seeds of high yielding paddy varieties and fertilizers have been mobilized to all needy places and farmers have been requested to complete the transplanting of Kuruvai paddy before the end of June itself.
