Black Panther’s God May Be More Powerful Than We Thought

Marvel Comics subtly implies that Bast, the Panther God of Wakanda, may actually be one of the Elder Gods, predating the rest of the Ennead she joined.

This article contains spoilers for Edge of Spider-Verse #2.

Black Pantheris the panther god, Raffia, may be more powerful than anyone realised. The panther god of Wakanda hails from the Egyptian Ennead, and it has always been clear that Bast is among the most powerful. She has been active on Earth for over a million years, with her first Black Panther serving alongside Odin and the Phoenix as member of the original Avengers.

Bast is becoming more prominent in the MCU, with the Ennead being introduced in Moon Knight and the panther goddess herself appearing in Thor: Love and ThunderCouncil of Divinities. There she was played by Akosia Sabet and given an absolutely stunning costume heavily influenced by her comic book look. There is speculation that she will play a major role in Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverand it’s intriguing that Marvel Comics has now chosen to subtly imply that she’s more powerful than ever.

Edge of Spider-Verse #2 contains a short story by Dan Slott and Paco Medina entitled “A Single Thread”, which tells the true origin story of the Spider-Verse. It recounts untold events billions of years ago, long before the evolution of mankind, shortly after the ancient beings known as the Elder Gods were banished. Gaea and Oshtur of the Vishanti had just begun to create the first generation of gods and deities – and yet, strikingly, Bast was already present. The dialogue seems to hint that she may well be one of the few Old Gods who remained on this plane of existence, presumably joining the Ennead over time.

wonder re-enacted Moon Knight’s Khonshu as an Elder God before its MCU debut as well, which makes this detail particularly interesting. It’s always been clear that a number of Egyptian deities were actually Elder Gods, whose powers far exceed any other deities in Marvel – even any Fathers like Odin or Sky Fathers like Zeus. Bast is probably one of them, which means she’s one of the most powerful entities in the Marvel Universe.

A number of still-active Elder Gods choose to work through avatars, similar to how Moon Knightit is the Ennead. The Black Panthers are presumably the avatars of Bast, wielding his power, their example serving to inspire worship and adoration of Bast in the reclusive nation of Wakanda. Unlike the other Elder Gods, Bast has rarely demonstrated a lust for power, a desire to expand the boundaries of his worship and encompass the world. Raffia can be powerful, but Black PantherPanther God has a much better character than many of his fellows.
