Diddy wants hip-hop to turn a blind eye to Verzuz until Triller pays Swizz Beatz and Timbaland what they say they’re owed.
TMZ broke the story on Tuesday that Verzuz creators and veteran music producers sued Thriller for $28 million, saying the company had missed many payments. Swizz Beatz and Timbaland sold the brand to Triller in 2021 and say the company failed after just two payments.
In their lawsuit, both say they initially settled with Triller, but the company returned to insolvency after only one payment.
In a statement to TMZ, a representative for Thriller said the company had paid the two more than $50 million in cash and stock, and that the dispute involved another performance-related payment that the company says Verzuz has yet to meet.
“It’s just one payment of $10 million,” the representative told TMZ. “We do not believe they have yet met the thresholds for that payment, which include, but are not limited to, the delivery of a certain number of Verzuz events for 2022. We have attempted to resolve the matter amicably and this will not affect Verzuz’s operations or Thriller’s ownership of Verzuz. If the matter proceeds to court, we look forward to a verdict weighing all the facts.”
Verzuzin Instagram it has been dark since August 3rd. Diddy seems to catch Triller’s attention and suggests that he do a version of the idea without the company’s involvement.
Thursday night, music mogul went on Instagram with fellow mogul Jermaine Dupri, challenging him to a hit scene between their two label catalogs. Shortly after, Diddy clarified that they would have to do it themselves due to allegations from Timbaland and Swizz Beatz.
“Because we’re not with Verzuz anymore, because they’re with the boys, we don’t have to be against each other,” Diddy said. “Let’s get together and do it Bad Boy / So So Def in Atlanta. It’s not Verzuz, it’s just hit against.”
The next day, Diddy changed his statement and blamed Triller. “We’re not together with Thriller until they take care of Swizz and Tim for Verzuz,” he said in another Instagram Live.
Styles P, who was involved in Verzuz’s battle between Lox and Dipset, has also said he will boycott Triller if the allegations are true.
“It would be good if Triller and Swizz and Tim could hang around and figure out a way to fix it,” Styles said. TMZ. “Hip-hop people shouldn’t be in it if Swizz and Tim aren’t in it. I sure wouldn’t watch it, I wouldn’t watch it at all.”
