Final Fantasy 16 is expected to receive a mature rating ahead of its summer 2023 launch, which is something of a novelty for games in Square Enix’s acclaimed RPG series. To date, there are only a handful of titles that exceed a T or E rating, and Final Fantasy XVI seems to be one of them. In a interview with GameSpotproducer Naoki Yoshida said the team pursued this evaluation because it allowed them to more freely tell whatever story they wanted.
According to Yoshida, while he thinks somewhat restrictive ratings are important to ensure the right people are consuming the right content, trying to tell a more mature story while staying within the restrictions of ratings below the mature level can get in the way. the creative process and the player experience.
“When you’re trying to tell a story with tough adult themes, those ratings can end up being a bit of a hindrance. And you find yourself changing things that you wanted to do in the game based on that rating. You wanted to show something thing, but because you have this certain rating that you have to go to, you have to move the camera away, and that ends up making the whole experience a little cheaper.
For Final Fantasy XVI, however, Square Enix breaks with the norm and pushes for the mature end of the rating ladder. To date, only Final Fantasy Type-0 and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin have been rated mature, and they’re both spin-off titles. Final Fantasy XVI is the first in the main series to receive this rating.
“This time, to make sure we could tell the story we wanted in the way we wanted, we decided to pursue mature evaluation in most of the regions that will release the game,” Yoshida explained. “But again, it’s not because we just wanted to make the game more violent or the game more explicit, it’s because we felt it was necessary to allow us to explore these more mature themes. that the game is about.”
Although ESRB rating is pending at the time of this writing, PEGI, the European regulatory body, has already released Final Fantasy XVI a provisional note 18 and, based on the latest trailer, it’s likely to stay that way unless there are major changes to the game’s content.
Final Fantasy XVI will be released in summer 2023 exclusively on PS5.
