Jessica Gao Reveals Which Movie Inspired Her Black Widow Pitch

Jessica Gao is riding the wave of the successful launch of its Disney+ series from Marvel Studios She-Hulk: Lawyer. The new superhero series is well received by fans and critics alike for its comedic tone, tight pacing, and fresh take on superhero storytelling. Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) is witty, breaks the fourth wall, Flea bag style, and perfectly controls his rage! One can only wonder why Gao hasn’t been involved in any other Marvel projects so far, however, in a recent interview with The envelopethe rick and morty alum revealed details about her Black Widow pitch and that she was turned down for several projects by the studio, sparking a long running joke between her and the head of Marvel Kevin Feige.

Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) found his standalone movie after the character saw his demise in the MCU. Chronologically, the film falls somewhere between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. We finally see Natasha attempt to remove the “red from her ledger” and also meet her estranged Russian family of Red Guardian / Alexei Shostakov (David Harbor), Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weiz), and Yelena Belova (Florence Poug).

Gao described his pitch as “Gros Pointe Virgin for Black Widow.” The 1997 film starring John Cusack, follows a spy who attends a 10-year-old high school reunion while on a mission. Drawing on the story, Gao explained his speech in broad strokes: “Basically, you find out that in high school, as a teenage Russian spy/agent, she was planted in an American high school, because she had to murder someone’s father.” Further adding, “then 20 years later she goes back to the high school reunion and has to deal with the fallout of that fake identity where she betrayed all those people in high school.”

The She-Hulk the designer also revealed that she met with the studio for projects like Captain Marvel and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings who finally went as a duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleckand Destin Daniel Cretton respectively. Nevertheless, according to Gao, these events only led her to land She-Hulk. She further revealed that every time she was going to throw something, “it was like, ‘Oh, hey, what’s up? Is this the time of year when you’re rejecting me again? Cool What have you been up to since you rejected me? It really made the play feel very warm. It was that humor that gave Marvel execs a “really good idea” of what the meaning of Gao’s humor. And certainly, this is reflected in the She-Hulk series and its characters.
