John Constantine Just Became Key To DC’s Vampire Wars

John Constantine has just become key to DC’s Vampire Wars, suggesting that his ability to think outside the box is vital to the survivors’ mission.

Warning! Spoilers for DC vs. Vampires #8.

DC Comics continues its bloodthirsty story in DC Vampire Slayer #8, which reveals how John Constantine and his two teams are essential to defeating the Vampire War. This new issue shows that Constantine also has a magical team trying to find a cure for vampirism, adding yet another possible solution to ending the vampire war.

dc the vampire slayer shows most of DC heroes (including the Justice League) are turning into vampires as the Vampire King wages war on Earth. Although their onslaught seems endless and unstoppable, a small group of survivors form a resistance to end the tyranny of the vampires. In the spin-off DC vs. Vampires: All Out War comic book, which is set a year after the events of DC vs. Vampires, Constantine orchestrates a team consisting of Deathstroke, Booster Gold, Mary Marvel, Damage and others. Initially, their goal was to find a Lazarus Pit to resurrect Batman and bring the world’s greatest detective back into the fight. Before they can do so, Azrael falls into the pit and becomes human again, revealing that the Lazarus pit can heal vampires and Azrael can now replace Batman.

DC vs Vampires #8 by James Tynion IV, Matthew Rosenberg and Otto Schmidt, reinforces total war idea that Constantine is vital because of his critical thinking that pushes ideas out of the box. Trying to find multiple solutions to the Vampire War, Constantine pushes the morality of the survivors to extremes and brings their hopelessness to light. The latest issue reveals that the House of Mysteries is filled with magic users. Constantine, Doctor Fate, Phantom Stranger and others use magic on vampires to find a cure. When Mister Zsasz, now a vampire, finds their experience heinous when he says, “your kind rushes to call us freaks, but here you are torturing one of our own”, reminding readers that they are taking an approach different from the Lazarus pit. Constantine corrects Zsasz when he mentions, “We’re not torturing him. We are trying to cure it.

The issue indicates that the survivors are so desperate for an answer that they resort to vampire torture methods for information. Constantine explores all options to cure vampirism despite questionable morals, including torturing vampires to bring them back to life and resuscitating corpses in green water. While Constantine isn’t exactly an anti-hero, he’s far from your typical DC hero and is more than willing to bend his beliefs if it means accomplishing a greater goal. It’s exactly that kind of thinking that DC’s heroes will need if they’re going to defeat the hordes of undead.

War breeds immorality and controversial decisions, and as shown DC Vampire Slayer #8 and DC vs. Vampires: All Out War, it is necessary to prevent evil forces from taking over the world. A overpowered vampire hunter like John Constantine understands this lesson as DC Comics allows the super-powered hero to shine in his attempt to help the remaining human superheroes take a stand against the vampire army.
