The song features Bey riffing on Madonna’s 1990 genre classic “Vogue.” In the original version, Madonna introduced a list of classic Hollywood actors – “Greta Garbo and Monroe / Dietrich and DiMaggio / Marlon Brando, Jimmy Dean / on the cover of the magazine” – while evoking the New York ballroom and drag scene, elevating elements that make up the subcultures of pop- to the list.

Beyoncé already pulled from Robin S. and Big Freedia on “Break My Soul,” but here she weaves her own hooks into “Vogue.” He cites a long list of his own influences – “Queen Mother Madonna, Aaliyah, Rosetta Tharpe, Santigold, Bessie Smith, Nina Simone, Betty DavisSolange Knowles, Badu this, so Kelly Rowl…” – and a few New York fashion houses like House of LaBeija and House of Revlon.

This isn’t Beyoncé’s first appearance in the expanded Madonna universe; she appeared in the 2015 “Bitch I’m Madonna” video. But this is the first time the two pop figures have appeared together on a song.
