Peta Murgatroyd and Maks Chmerkovskiy talk about miscarriages

Peta Murgatroyd revealed on Tuesday that she suffered a miscarriage in October a few days after a COVID-19-positive test. At the time, her husband and “Dancing with the Stars” professional Maksim Chmerkovskiy were working in his native Ukraine.

In an exclusive interview with People magazinethe professional dancer recalled calling the ambulance to herself when she was unable to get up from the floor of her 5-year-old son’s bedroom.

“I didn’t have the strength,” he told People. “I couldn’t open the dishwasher. I couldn’t open the fridge to eat [my son] Shai. … It got so bad that the breathing started to bother me. It was really dramatic. ”

When she arrived at the hospital, the doctor asked if she knew she was pregnant. Murgatroyd, who had assumed the bleeding meant the onset of menstruation, did not do so. And Chmerkovskiy, who had only heard the words “You’re pregnant,” began to celebrate through the speakerphone without realizing that his wife had just had a miscarriage.

“In hindsight,” Murgatroyd said, unknowingly about the pregnancy, was better for my recovery because I didn’t have that super-happy moment, “I’m pregnant again!” … I just had a moment: “You lost it.”

This was not Murgatroyd’s first miscarriage. The former Broadway performer also reported a miscarriage at the Whole Foods bathroom in the fall of 2020, five weeks after her pregnancy. Murgatroyd said he was shocked and “petrified.”

“I was trying to say to myself,‘ It’s going to be okay. ’Of course deep down I knew,” he told People.

“I sat in the bathroom crying,” he added. “I’m surprised no one walked in because I cried so hard and cried. … It was something that would probably live with me for the rest of my life when I’m in the toilet myself, I knew what was going on, and I can’t stop it. ”

Chmerkovskiy called the experience that his wife lost her baby in a public bathroom “as dark as it can be.” Murgatroyd admitted to being “embarrassed” and “ashamed.” But he “realized” that the reproductive system can function regardless of a person’s general health.

“It took me a very long time to get over it,” he said. “It was months and months I cried most nights in bed alone, I cried in the shower, it was a lot of denial. What had I done wrong? “

Several months later, celebrity choreographers tried again. Realizing she was “ovulating soon,” Murgatroyd flew to Europe, where her husband was on the judging panel. Ukrainian edition “Dancing with the Stars”.

On his trip to Ukraine, Murgatroyd became infected with the coronavirus. She said the baby was unable to cope with the early stages of her pregnancy when she contracted respiratory illness.

“I felt like I was dying, but then apparently I knew what had happened,” he told People. “It was just too much for my body and I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t believe this happened to me. “

“To be there [with her] … it’s crazy. It will make you feel helpless, “said Chmerkovskiy, who fled Ukraine this year after Russia began attacking the people. continued to spread awareness attack on his homeland on social media.)

Since her last miscarriage, Murgatroyd was diagnosed with polycystic ovary disease, a hormonal imbalance that can affect ovulation and fertility.

Chmerkovskiy said abortions have made him a “changed man.” Before, he “never thought that two healthy, athletic people could be in such trouble.”

“I’m trying to do my best to support Peta,” he said. “If you look around, you’ll find that most of your friends have had problems [trying to conceive]. I understand that this is more common and not talked about. “
