Riddle’s biggest trick to date was getting a good game from Omos

WWE kept putting Riddle in places to prove he’s a superstar on Raw, and the man keeps knocking pitches over the fence.

No one will talk about Riddle v Omos from the June 20 edition of Monday night raw for a long time, but it still showed why Riddle is a legit superstar for WWE. It wasn’t a five-star classic that Dave Meltzer will write about over the next decade, and echoes of the result seem unlikely to be particularly widespread. Unless Omos wins Money in the bankthat’s another conversation entirely.

Instead, what’s remarkable about the game is that it wasn’t impossible to watch, boring or slow. These are the hallmarks of Omos’ fights so far, and it’s impossible to hold that against him as he is 7ft 3in and weighs 400lbs. Riddle did what Bobby Lashley had failed to do in recent months, which was to get a solid match from the big man. We’ve seen flashes of it in his contests against AJ Styles, but The Phenomenal One hasn’t been at his best lately.

Meanwhile, Riddle enjoyed a slow and steady push at the top of Monday night raw main card. WWE gets bored with these pet projects all the time and pulls the plug before they have a real chance to kick off. History is littered with former NXT stars who simply didn’t make it through their call-ups. RK-Bro’s booking was mostly on point, though, and Riddle’s momentum is now more than just a rub of a legend like Randy Orton. Riddle is a legit superstar in his own right, both in character and in-ring work.

There’s a dichotomy in Riddle’s character that some of WWE’s wrestlers miss. He’s able to make the audience laugh during his promos, but that’s because he’s just being himself. When the push is felt inside the fight, fans know he has the experience of a legit UFC fighter, so when he fires up, he has clout. Plus, few artists working right now can garner sympathy like Riddle can. It’s part of his great selling and part of his relationship with the injured Randy Ortonand it works wonderfully.

Audiences can count the number of tag teams that actually feel like brothers on the one hand. You could even argue that RK-Bro feels more tight-knit than The Usos, and they’re Actually family. WWE allows Riddle to leverage that emotional connection while performing at a high level in the ring, and the results have been a new main caliber star for Riddle. He hung out with Roman Reigns and made this one-on-one match believable. He lost, but he doesn’t feel like it hurts him. Meaning is he was right there in the main event with the biggest draw in the business and hung on. Omos’ post-match beatdown against Riddle drew more reactions than everything he did with Lashley, which says a lot about the former Deep Waters and its ability to sell and generate sympathy. Omos looks like a monster. Riddle looks like a star. Mission accomplished, WWE.
