Superman & Lois Created An Exception To His Superhero Rule For Season 3

New Superman & Lois’ Earth rules make it unlikely that a DC superhero will appear in Season 3, but the door is open for a huge exception.

Superman and Lois implemented an exception to its new superhero rules for Season 3. In the Season 2 finale, the series confirmed that its characters exist in a reality completely separate from the setting of other Arrowverse shows, such that the flash, super girland more.

A speech delivered by Sam Lane in the Superman and Lois season 2 finale confirmed that Tyler Hoechlin’s Big Blue Boy Scout and Steel are the only superheroes in his universe. Apparently the reality of Superman & Lois is an Earth-Prime copycat that lacks key characters like Supergirl, Flash, etc. According to the new rules established for Superman and Lois new Earth, Superman is the planet’s only super-powered hero. This means that even though people like Green Arrow have existed in its continuity, there is no place for metahumans or even another Kryptonian hero in Superman and Lois world. In other words, Superman and Lois the characters have never met Barry Allen or Kara Danvers, nor may they ever in the future.

Interestingly, the way Superman and Lois dropped this huge reveal allowed the series to have a big exception in a future storyline. Lane noted that he’s seen “legions” of heroes elsewhere in the galaxy, but maintained that Clark is the only one on Earth. This means that theoretically Superman & Lois can have intergalactic heroes. Specifically, the Legion of Super-Heroes may feature in the show’s canon. Not only that, but they can appear without issue for the show’s new rules. Part of the point of Superman and Lois Earth-Prime retcon was meant to provide an adequate explanation of why characters like Supergirl and Flash couldn’t help Superman. Adding a 31st century team can give Superman and Lois super-powered guest stars without making their introduction an issue for future stories.

Why the Legion of Super-Heroes Makes Sense for Superman and Lois

super girl already introduced the legion of super heroesbut Superman and Lois could easily get its own version with all-new actors playing characters like Saturn Girl and Lightning Lad. Unlike Supergirl and Flash, the Legion of Super-Heroes are characters Superman can’t just call on for help whenever he needs it. Since they are based in the future, having them appear in Superman and Lois won’t cause any complications later as Superman will remain Earth’s sole defender (as per the retcon).

Presumably, the Legion would only appear when they or they need help, not the other way around. If they appear in Superman and Lois season 3, an appearance from them can deliver the thrilling large-scale superhero squads that the show has denied viewers for two seasons. Given the nature of this particular group, no other DC Comics character or team has a better chance of being an exception to the rule in Season 3.
