The True Meaning Of Marvel’s Judgment Day Title Revealed

As the Avengers, X-Men, and Eternals go to war, the title of Marvel’s “Judgment Day” event suddenly becomes literal in the worst possible way.

Warning: contains spoilers for AXIS: Judgment Day #2!

As the avengersthe x-men and the Eternals going to war, Marvel’s newest event truly deserves the title “Judgment Day” in the most literal way. The war has been foretold for many months in 2022 and culminates in an event that sees two sides seek the extermination of the other, with a third (the Avengers) desperately trying to keep the peace while trying to find ground to common understanding – and not to be destroyed in the process. AXIS: Judgment Day #2 reveals the exact nature of the title: it is a literal on Judgment Day, and in 24 hours the fate of Earth will be decided by none other than the almighty Celestials themselves.

In the previous issue, the Eternal Druig gave a big speech to the other members of the Eternals. Their third principle is to “correct excessive deviation” and he sees mutants as analogous to Deviants, the archenemy of the Eternals. With their blessing, Druig announces the start of war to the humans – who are furious than the X-Men on Krakoa have been granted the power to resurrect but do not share it with the rest of the world. Mutants previously explained that the technology only works on mutants, but humans refuse to listen. The war begins as Krakoa is attacked by the Eternals’ massive war machines.

Now in AXIS: Judgment Day #2written by Keiron Gillen with art by Valerio Schiti, Iron Man Awakens Avengers Mountain, which is inside the Progenitor Celestial. This backfires horribly as the Celestial sees the three groups go to war with each other and immediately ends their fighting with an announcement that reverberates across the planet: “You have 24 hours to justify yourself…if there is more than evil, you will live. But if you are found wanting, there will be no tomorrow.” In an instant, the war between the X-Men, Eternals, and Avengers escalated into a war for Earth’s survival.

“Judgement Day” is more than just a marketing title: it’s a literal Judgment Day, heralded by the closest thing to the gods the Marvel Universe has (next to, of course, One Above All). The Celestials are involved because the Eternals have overstepped their bounds – but they could also attack the X-Men for essentially becoming immortal through their resurrection protocols. Either way, Earth is in danger thanks to the senseless war between the two sides.

It is unclear exactly how the Celestial Ancestor will judge all mankind (although it is notably not Arishem the Heavenly Judge), mutantkind and Eternals within twenty-four hours. Celestials have psionic powers and could reach the minds of all sentient beings on Earth – but they’re more likely to actively test everyone by presenting a challenge. Maybe the Eternals, X-Men and avengers will even unite to destroy the Celestial – but that’s a feat that can only be accomplished if all differences and hatred are put aside.
