When arriving at your Hotel on vacation, bed bugs are probably the last thing on your mind. Unfortunately, travel is one of the primary means of propagation for tiny creatures.

Although most hotels have vigorous cleaning routines, bed bugs can still appear in the crevices of establishments around the world.

However, there are some key steps you can take to protect yourself from annoying bites while on vacation.

Most people will automatically leave their suitcase somewhere by the bed in their hotel room or unpack their clothes in the nearby wardrobe.

As the name suggests, bed bugs like any area close to the bed because it gives them direct access to their food source.

Bedbugs rely solely on the blood of animals, including humans, and the ideal time to attack is while you are sleeping soundly.

That’s why they often hide in the piping, seams, tags, and box springs of mattresses, as well as the cracks in bed frames and headboards.

If there is an outbreak of bedbugs in your hotel room, the best way to ensure maximum protection for your belongings is to keep them away from any area where brown bedbugs are likely to be.

Missy Henriksen, former vice president of public affairs for the National Pest Management Association, said Health: “Bed bugs are less likely to be found in the bathroom.

The smell can also be a telltale sign of bed bugs. The MattressNextDay spokesperson explained: “You may have been to a hotel that smells a bit strange before, but the smell excreted by bed bugs is certainly recognizable.

“If the room has a strong, musty, unpleasant odor. This could come from a bed bug’s scent glands and is stronger when there are large amounts of bed bugs present.

“Always err on the side of caution when dealing with a smelly room and check for other signs as well.”
