Flight FR9085 was due to depart from East Midlands Airport (EMA) for Alicante in Spain, but was delayed after a refueling problem left liquid spilling on the tarmac. The passengers were said to have been seated on the plane around 7:30 a.m. and then evacuated.

According to Derbyshire Liveone passenger said he could see the fuel coming out and there was a “serious smell”.

They said: “Fuel was spilling all over the tarmac, the smell of fuel was severe and they used what looked like commercial grade cat litter to soak it up.”

Passengers began boarding around 11:30 a.m. and no injuries were reported.

Ryanair has been approached for comment.

An EMA spokesperson said: “A technical problem during refueling delayed the departure of a Ryanair flight to Alicante this morning. The flight is due to depart in the early afternoon. had no impact on other operations.”
