Speaking during an appearance on This morningDr. Mosley revealed that push-ups and squats are the “holy grail” of exercises because they are two of the “most accessible and versatile movements”.
Adding weights can make performing them more difficult, as they target and strengthen both your upper and lower body.
As functional movements, the benefits of adding them to a daily regimen will build injury resistance for everyday tasks.

“Besides that, there’s only one thing I recommend you add to your daily routine; resistance exercises like push-ups.
“There’s fascinating new research on the benefits of strength training, how a few minutes of daily resistance exercise — where you don’t need special equipment — can boost your brain as well as your muscles.
“There are two forms of strength exercise that I find particularly effective and easy to integrate into my life.
“The first is push-ups, one of the best inexpensive ways to build upper body strength.”
“The data suggests that if you combine them [diet] with exercise it’s a great way [to lose weight].
“And one of the things you want to do, and that’s the importance of protein – you need at least 50g of good quality protein a day – that preserves your muscle.
“What you want to do when you lose weight is lose fat and not lose muscle and that was the danger of going on a very low calorie, low protein diet – tea, juice – that’s that your body needs protein and if it’s not getting it from your diet, it’s from your muscles.”
He added: “So you need protein and decent exercise, which really means doing push-ups and squats.”
