Vitamin D deficiency symptoms: ‘Difficulty’ climbing stairs could be a sign

Symptoms of Vitamin D deficiencies are often “non-specific or vague”, meaning they can be missed. It is only when some of the more common symptoms are usually diagnosed. These include bone pain, as well as rickets in children.

According to Patient Info, “difficulty” climbing stairs may signal a deficiency.

He explains: “In a more severe deficiency (known as osteomalacia), there may be more intense pain and also weakness.

“The muscle weakness can cause difficulty climbing stairs or getting up from the floor or a low chair, or can cause the person to walk with a waddle.”

Other signs of vitamin D deficiency in adults include “general fatigue, vague aches and pains, and a general feeling of being unwell.”

It can also lead to bone problems.

“The bones can be painful with moderate pressure (often most noticeable in the ribs or shins),” says Patient Info.

“It’s not uncommon for people to have a hairline fracture in the bone that causes tenderness and pain.

“Bone pain often also occurs in the lower back, hips, pelvis, thighs and feet.”


The best way to make sure you’re getting enough vitamin D is to get 20 to 30 minutes of sun exposure on your face and forearms around midday, two to three times a week.

But “sunlight must fall directly on bare skin (through a window is not enough)”.

Foods that can increase your vitamin D intake include fatty fish, egg yolk, red meat, liver, and cod liver oil.

Or supplements can be taken if you still feel like you don’t have enough.
