Britishvolt has signed a multi-million pound deal with WMG, University of Warwick, to ramp up battery production at its upcoming 38 GWh battery gigaplant, which is one of the biggest industrial investments ever undertaken in the UK. During this two-year contract, the university researcher will participate in the development of battery cell technologies and participate in optimization. This includes small-scale manufacturing to produce electrodes and battery cells using Britishvolt target material packages, formulations and cell designs.

Earlier this month, Britishvolt also announced that it would build a £200 million battery scale-up facility in the West Midlands which would create new cell formats to help make “better batteries efficient, production-ready and cheaper for electric vehicles”.

The company believes this facility, combined with the Gigafactory, could revive the UK car industry, which has suffered a severe blow. as companies like Jaguar Land Rover would look overseas to meet their needs.

Although JLR have promised to keep their factory and assembly facilities in the UK, they have previously said that they will “explore all options” regarding the supply of electric batteries for vehicles.

As more major automakers announce plans to switch to electric vehicles, a UK-based gigafactory could help entice more automakers to move into the UK.
