Chinese diplomat slams Nancy Pelosi for Taiwan visit
The news comes after Ms Pelosi’s controversed journey to the disputed island which China claims to belong to the nation under the “One China” policy. Already, the diplomatic fallout from the visit has begun, with China restricting trade with Taiwan, as well as Beijing carrying out live-fire exercises in the Taiwan Strait during Mrs. Pelosi’s visit. Yet it is the long-term impact of the trip that will dictate the future of relations between Washington and Beijing.
Addressed exclusively to Express.co.ukSenior Fellow at the Taihe Institute in China, Einar Tangen was asked why the United States ignored warnings issued to the United States ahead of the House Speaker’s visit, the first since the 1990s when Newt Gingrich visited the island.
Mr Tanger said: “There are two different narratives from the American side and one narrative from the Chinese side.
“American Story 1: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi decided on her own initiative to visit Taiwan on a trip to Asia.
“US Narrative 2: Joe Biden and Anthony Blinken wanted to have plausible deniability while continuing a campaign to pressure China.
“The fact that the plane carrying the President is a United States Air Force plane and that the visit required 40 combat planes, supply planes and the redirection of a nuclear aircraft carrier indicates a high level of planning and involvement.
“There are no apparent benefits for Taiwan, just verbal support, ahead of an election Tai Yingwei faces.”
China has warned of a long-term impact on China-US relations
Ms Pelosi’s visit was condemned by many in Taiwan and China
Mr. Tangen continued: “The Chinese narrative: Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan shattered the basis of the diplomatic relationship that was established in the early 1970s and 1980s, with the three joint communiqués between the United States and China. China where expressly agreed. that there was only one China, that Taiwan would be removed from the UN and replaced on the Security Council by the People’s Republic of China.
Mr. Tangen then spoke of the long-term impact on relations between the two nations.
He said: “China has military, diplomatic and economic options against the United States.
“Given the seriousness of the violation, militarily China is already using live-fire exercises around the island to send a message, diplomatically either a downgrade in relations or the removal of the Chinese and American consulates could be a option; economically, additional duties on Chinese goods destined for the United States could add to existing inflation.
“Current actions make war a problem, but would require an additional step by Taiwan, such as a declaration of independence.”

Mr Tangen asked why Ms Pelosi had traveled to Taiwan on a government plane
Finally, Mr. Tangen spoke about the relations that China will maintain with Taiwan after the visit.
He concluded: “40% of Taiwan’s economy depends on mainland China, there is no practical way to disentangle markets or investments.
“Beijing has shown consistent restraint on economic issues involving Taiwan, opting instead to offer incentives for investment and work.
“The people of Taiwan are Chinese, punishing the people of Taiwan for what they see as misguided moves if their leadership has not been an option, so far.”

Despite pressure from China before, during and after the trip, the United States said it would continue to stand firmly behind Taiwan.
Ms Pelosi said of her trip: “We are proud of our enduring friendship.
“Now more than ever, America’s solidarity with Taiwan is crucial and that is the message we bring here today.”
Speaking of the Chinese drills coinciding with the trip, Taiwan’s defense ministry described the military drills as “irrational” and equivalent to a “blockade”.
He said the planned drills would violate Taiwan’s territorial waters, “threaten an international waterway, challenge international order, undermine the status quo across the strait, and endanger regional security.”
