Anthony Joshua ‘wasn’t happy’ with Robert Garcia in build-up to Oleksandr Usyk fight | Boxing | sport

Robert Garcia revealed that Antoine Joshua wasn’t happy with him and Angel Fernandez at times ahead of his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk. The dynamic duo cracked the whip during the preparations and pushed ‘AJ’ to his limits as Garcia claimed he wasn’t at camp to be Joshua’s friend.

Following the loss to Usyk in September, Joshua knocked out longtime manager Rob McCracken and went in search of an experienced chef to work alongside Fernandez at his Loughborough side. Garcia was chosen from a long list of high quality American trainers and has a proven track record of producing very aggressive and powerful fighters – playing to Joshua’s strengths.

Garcia has led 14 men to world championship reigns throughout his storied career, but none above middleweight. Among the list of fighters he has worked with are former four division champion and his brother Mikey Garcia, Marcos Maidana, Jose Ramirez, Bam Rodriguez, Abner Mares, Nonito Donaire, Brandon Rios and Antonio Margarito.

With extensive experience, Garcia knows how important discipline is and demands it every time Joshua walks into the gym.

“We said to Anthony, look, you might not like us in training camp. We’re going to push you to do whatever we want you to do. There’s going to be days when you’re going to complain about us and Yeah, those days been where [he thinks,] “You don’t give me credit for the things I do well.” Well, that’s good because we want you to do more. But after the fight, you’re gonna love us. You will thank us.”

Joshua takes on Usyk for the second time on Saturday at King Abdullah Sport City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, live on Sky Sports Box Office. Powerhouse Watford are expected to take a more aggressive approach under their new squad and have focused on exploiting their malicious streak in preparations.
