Arsenal kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 road win at Crystal Palace thanks to goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Marc Guehi, who unfortunately turned the ball into their own net. The Gunners are under pressure to deliver this season after dropping fourth to Spurs last season and their campaign got off to the best possible start with three points and a clean sheet.
Arsenal were largely dominant, although Palace had their moments when they had the visitors on the back foot.
The Eagles had a lot of work to do from the start when Arsenal took an early lead through Martinelli in the 20th minute.
The Brazilian headed home from close range after Oleksandr Zinchenko headed the ball towards the goal from a corner.
Bukayo Saka helped seal the win late in the second half when his cross was turned past his own keeper by Palace defender Guehi.
Here’s how the Gunners rated themselves at Selhurst Park as they started their season on a high note in south-east London…
Aaron Ramsdale – 7
Took his time on the ball and put Arsenal under unwanted early pressure after taking the lead.
Made a nice save to deny Odsonne Edouard in the first half. Clean sheet.
Ben White – 7
He had his hands full trying to deal with Wilfried Zaha, but usually did enough, despite a few groggy moments. Very calm on the ball but reserved for a foul on the winger.
Guillaume Saliba – 8
The defense looks easy. A really solid debut from the 21-year-old, who made an exceptional tackle to stop Zaha in his tracks in the second half.
Gabriel Magalhaes – 8
There was a cry for a Crystal Palace when the ball hit his arm after falling from the sky. Defended well but nearly spun into his own net in the second half after being fouled by Jordan Ayew.
Oleksandr Zinchenko – 8
Stung Vicente Guaita’s palms from range, while scoring on his Arsenal debut with an assist for Martinelli.
Thomas Partey – 7
Strong and provided Arsenal with some courage in the middle of the park.
Xhaka Granite – 7
Reserved for the dive but decent enough performance from one of Arsenal’s leaders.
Bukayo Saka – 7
Not as sharp as usual but to be expected considering it’s the first game of the season. Decision-making was poor at times, but boosted his rating by securing an assist for Arsenal’s second when his cross landed on Marc Guehi’s head.
Martin Odegaard – 6
Should have been more decisive in key moments, could have had a shot on goal but opted to pass – wasting several chances.
Gabriel Martinelli – 7
Looked very rusty but eventually scored the opener which was all that mattered.
Missed a keeper five minutes into the game with his left foot, but redeemed himself on the way home.
Gabriel Jesus – 8
Stunning center-front screen. Ran his socks off and looked very, very lively. The goals will come, Jesus looks like a real asset to this Arsenal team.
Kieran Tierney – 7
Eddie Nketiah – 7
Sambi Lokonga – N/A
