Chelsea transfer news: Romelu Lukaku’s exit ‘accepted’ as Todd Boehly uses his contacts | Soccer | sport

Chelsea have now reached an ‘agreement in principle’ to loan Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan, according to reports. Lukaku’s return to Stamford Bridge fell short of expectations last year and he even struggled to start regularly under Thomas Tuchel.

As the summer transfer window approached, it became clear that Lukaku was eager to return to San Siro and that Inter were also pushing for a deal. Given the Italian side’s finances, they were only interested in a loan deal and Chelsea’s new owner Todd Boehly was ready to let the Belgian go.

Inter’s first offer was rejected but the two sides have returned to the table and have now reached an ‘agreement’, according to Athleticism. The striker will join Inter on a season-long loan with no option or obligation for the deal to become permanent next summer.

It is claimed that Inter will pay an initial fee worth £6.8m (€8m) with potential add-ons and conditions on the striker’s wages also agreed. Boehly is said to have played a “key” role in the negotiations due to his relationship with Michael Yormark. Yormack is president of Roc Nation – a sports agency that represents Lukaku – and they also have Kevin De Bruyne and Tyrone Mings on their books.

A medical is due to take place next week before pre-season training resumes, where he will reconnect with several players he won the Serie A title with in 2021. Lukaku was expected to be the central point of attack from Chelsea when the Blues spent a club record worth £97million to re-sign him 12 months ago.

Tuchel was desperate to bring in a central striker and quickly switched to Lukaku once it became clear Erling Haaland was out of reach. He had an impressive start with four goals in as many games, including the winner of Chelsea’s Champions League opener against Zenit St Petersburg.

But the goals quickly dried up and he struggled to build momentum with injury and then coronavirus which hampered his form over the winter. And it was around Christmas that Lukaku got into Chelsea’s bad books after an explosive interview aired on Sky Italy where he discussed the prospect of returning to Inter.

Lukaku also named Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich as the ‘three absolute best teams in football’ he would like to join. These comments did not sit well with Chelsea fans and they also coincided with Lukaku’s loss as a regular Chelsea starter.

Tuchel ended up opting for Kai Havertz in the middle with Lukaku on the bench for big matches such as the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool while he was completely dropped from the squad for the second leg of the quarter-finals of the Champions League against Real Madrid.
