India have been assured of a second medal in the lawn bowl event after the men’s fours team reached the final of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Friday. Lovely Choubey (lead), Pinky (second), Nayanmoni Saikia (third) and Roopa Rani Tirkey (slip) followed a quartet to clinch a historic gold for India on Tuesday to beat South Africa 17-10 in the women’s fours final. It was the turn of the men’s team to follow their female counterparts. The men’s quartet of Sunil Bahadur (lead), Navneet Singh (second), Chandan Kumar Singh (third) and Dinesh Kumar (skip) beat hosts England by a nearly 13-12 margin to give India at least a silver medal in the semi-finals. ,
Earlier in the day, the women’s pair of Lovely Choubey and Nayanmoni Saikai had crashed out of the games after losing in the quarterfinals.
The Indian pair lost 18-14 to England’s Sophie Tollcard and Amy Pharoah.
Choubey and Saikai held the lead on two occasions, 5-2 after the first four rounds and 8-6 after the end nine.
However, they lost an early lead and allowed English pair Tolchard (lead) and Pharoah (skip) to make a strong comeback.
After the 10th round, England went ahead and extended their lead and eventually emerged victorious.
