Emma Raducanu suffers the same fate as Nick Kyrgios and Andy Murray before the US Open | Tennis | sport

Emma Raducanu suffered the same fate as Nick Kyrgios and Andy Murray ahead of the US Open after earning a tough draw at the Canadian Open. Raducanu announced herself to the world tennis scene 11 months ago when she won the US Open aged just 18.

Raducanu will be desperate to produce solid form ahead of the Flushing Meadows tournament as she seeks to defend her title. But she is expected to face Camila Giorgi, last year’s Canadian Open champion, in the first round in Montreal.

Italy’s Giorgi, who is ranked No. 29 in the world, stunned Czech fourth seed Karolina Pliskova last year to win the final 6-3 7-5 and clinch her first victory on the WTA Tour since 2019. She reached the Eastbourne semi-finals earlier this summer and advanced to the fourth round of last year’s US Open.

So Raducanu will have to be at the top of her game if she wants to get the better of her first-round opponent. The Brit reached the quarter-finals of the Citi Open in Washington this week before losing to Russia’s Ludmilla Samsonova in straight sets.

Raducanu’s run at the Citi Open marked the first time she had reached the last eight of a tournament since the Stuttgart Open in April. The ace reached the second round of Roland-Garros in May, before succumbing to Aliaksandra Sasnovich in three sets. And she only made it to the second round at Wimbledon in June, where she lost to Caroline Garcia.

Since Wimbledon, Raducanu started working with former tennis star Dmitry Tursanov as a trainer on a trial. And she recently admitted she’s enjoying the new partnership. “He definitely has a good sense of humor and he definitely tries to make it easy for me,” the youngster said. “He’s just slowly trying to move me towards ‘if it’s not perfect, it’s fine. Like, if you hit one, it’s fine. Just that stuff and better accept that.
