Oleksandr UsykJordan Thompson’s former sparring partner said Antoine Joshua to ‘clear Usyk’s head for him’ after revealing he had ‘unfinished business’ with the Ukrainian. Thompson then teased a story that explains why the couple had a falling out during a recent interview.
Talk to iFL TV, he said, “I fought Usyk. I fought Usyk in Ukraine. It was interesting so I hope AJ clears his head, I’ll tell you for free, please clean up for me.”
When asked what happened during the training session, Thompson replied, “Not much, but when I see Usyk, I have some business to attend to. You’re gonna take me out, look you’re gonna take me out. I’ll tell the story one day, maybe even tell it to you, on iFL live, but me and Usyk are going to see each other one day for sure.
Thompson fought Usyk in the build-up to ‘The Cat’s’ 2018 undisputed heavyweight unification bout against Murat Gassiev. Giving more information about the tricks he shared with Usyk during an interview with Odds changer, the Briton revealed that Usyk’s side weren’t happy with his style.
He said: “It was interesting. They weren’t happy with my style and asked me to box more like Gassiev, which was a tough question considering I’m more of a ranged fighter, whereas Gassiev is much more advanced than me.
“Him being a southpaw. At the time, I hadn’t yet shared the ring with another southpaw, so diving into the depths with one of the best southpaws on the planet was a bit tricky for me, however, I ‘ve learned a heck of a lot from that.”
Asked if he spotted any weaknesses in Usyk’s game during their training session, Thompson replied: “I found I had a lot of hits for the body and he didn’t. didn’t like it.”

Usyk was injured by body shots on occasion during his amateur career. In 2011, he was dropped by a right hook to the stomach by WBC, IBF and WBO light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev. Then, two years later, in a World Series of Boxing fight, a direct right to the solar plex from three-time amateur gold medalist Magomedrasul Majidov sent Usyk to the canvas again.
Joshua, who is preparing to face Usyk for the second time, could potentially look to exploit this “weakness” in their August 20 rematch in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The former unified champion is expected to deploy more aggressive tactics compared to their first fight after eliminating Robert McCracken as head coach and replacing him with Robert Garcia.
