It is another hat-trick of gold medals in the sport of wrestling for India as Ravi Kumar Dahiya, Vinesh Phogat and Naveen won the yellow metal in their respective categories. Their efforts come a day after the trio of Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Deepak Punia won the gold medal on Friday. The total number of gold medals from wrestling now stands at 6, the most for India in any single discipline at the CWG 2022.

Wrestler Ravi Dahiya won his first major gold medal as he defeated Nigeria’s Abikevenimo Welson in the final of the men’s 57kg final by technical superiority at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Her gold was followed by Vinesh Phogat, who won the yellow metal in the women’s 54kg category after winning all her three matches. The winner in the category was decided by the Nordic system, in which all competitors play against each other in a round-robin system, with the wrestler with the most wins receiving the gold. Vinesh won all three of her matches with relative ease.

This was Vinesh’s third gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. She also has a bronze at the World Championships and a gold and bronze in the Asian Games. It is a big comeback for Vinesh, who suffered a major slump at the Tokyo Olympics, where she was one of the top contenders for the gold medal.

Naveen was equally good as he ended a stellar campaign in the men’s 74kg category after beating Pakistan’s Muhammad Sharif Tahir 9-0 in the final.

Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Ravi Kumar Dahiya was too good for his field. He won both his matches with technical superiority against Suraj Singh of New Zealand and Asad Ali of Pakistan and did the same in the final.
