Ryans Giggs supported by Sir Alex Ferguson during his court appearance as the trial continues | Soccer | sport

Ryan Giggs has a ‘fantastic temper’, former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson told jurors today. The 80-year-old came to Manchester Crown Court in person to give evidence about Giggs at his trial.

The 48-year-old former Manchester United star is accused of controlling and coercive behavior towards his ex Kate Greville, 36, during their six-year relationship.

He is also accused of headbutting her during an argument at their home in Worsley, Greater Manchester in November 2020 and elbowing his younger sister Emma in the jaw.

Giggs denies all charges.

Sir Alex gave evidence from the witness box for around ten minutes this afternoon, telling jurors he had known Giggs since he was 13.

Asked by Giggs’ lawyer Chris Daw QC about Giggs’ temperament, Sir Alex said: ‘There was the dressing room issue, I used Ryan a lot – when I was losing my temper about a performance, I was using Ryan as an example.

“Sometimes he got the sharp tip of my tongue. I knew he could take it and he was strong enough and I know everyone in the locker room would be like oh, if Ryan Giggs can take it, we can all take it.

Mr Daw asked: “In terms of temperament as in terms of players who can be quick to anger and quickly become aggressive, where would you place Ryan on the spectrum in terms of temperament?”

Sir Alex said: “Fantastic temperament, wonderful temperament. To have a career as long as he has and to be in a position where he had energy. He did everything we wanted.” arguably the best example I had at the club. Everyone considered Ryan to be number one.”

Asked if he had ever seen Giggs become “angry or aggressive”, Sir Alex replied: “No, no.”

Mr Daw also asked how the two met, to which Sir Alex said: “On one occasion we started visiting his house to convince him to come to Manchester United. [He was] 13.

“We tried very hard to convince him to come to Manchester United, but the main contact was his mum. She was great and very accommodating. She welcomed our visits time and time again.

“Ryan was a quiet boy; he just sat there and listened to what we were saying.

“The club had been through a bad period when I joined in 1986, so it was a big job to do and we saw Ryan as a step towards a better club.”

He added: “As I said, he was a calm boy and we really dealt with the mother.

“The press, the media started comparing him to George Best and we had to deal with a lot of media attention on the boy and I said to his mother if you really trust me I will take care of him and, if anyone from the media came to him, they had to go through me.

“We had to protect him because when someone says he’s the next George Best, that’s a big thing, a big deal. But the boy was great. There was no problem.

Asked if Giggs had ‘lots of girlfriends’, Sir Alex replied: ‘When he was older we had dinner parties at the end of the season. He would bring a friend with him yeah.

The trial continues.
