Serena Williams returns to Eastbourne doubles tennis after year ends

Serena Williams made a comeback from tennis after a year as the American legend teamed up with Ons Jaboor at the Eastbourne International doubles on Tuesday. Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, was back in action for the first time since her exit from Wimbledon last year. The 40-year-old suffered a leg injury during a Wimbledon first-round match against Aliksandra Sasnovi and has not been seen on court since.

Williams and Tunisia’s Jabeur, who is ranked third in the WTA singles rankings, face Spain’s Sara Soribes Tormo and Czech Republic’s Marie Buzkova.

After so long, Serena drew applause from the crowd to a raucous reception as she took to the court in the evening sun.

Before Williams made the surprise announcement of his impending return last week, rumors of retirement swirled around him for several months.

But, with Wimbledon starting on 27 June, Williams eventually resumed her career, playing alongside Jaboor in the Wimbledon warm-up event on the Sussex Seaside.

Jabeur, who won the Berlin WTA singles title over the weekend, admitted on Monday that she doesn’t need “another” to consider teaming up with the American.

“He is such an inspiration and the fact that we are playing doubles together is huge news for me and it is unbelievable,” she said.

Serena has been given a wildcard to play in singles at Wimbledon as she resumes her history bid.

Williams is one Grand Slam crown away from equaling Australian Margaret Court’s record of 24 singles titles in the Majors.

The last of Williams’ 23 Grand Slam singles titles came at the Australian Open in 2017.

Since then she has lost four Grand Slam finals including Wimbledon in 2018 and 2019.

Williams won her seventh and most recent of her seven Wimbledon singles titles in 2016.

Serena, who became a mother in 2017, has dropped to 1,204th place in the WTA rankings due to her period out of action.

His longtime coach, Patrick Mouratoglu, revealed in April that he had taken on a new role alongside Simona Halep.

Wimbledon is widely regarded as the best chance for Williams to win another Grand Slam.
