Tottenham join race for Chelsea starlet Trevoh Chalobah as Conte plans to loot ex-club | Soccer | sport

Tottenham would be interested in signing pledges chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah as manager Antonio Conte is looking to add another defender to his ranks. The 23-year-old broke into the Blues first team last season, making 30 appearances in all competitions.

But he is yet to come off the bench in Chelsea’s two Premier League games so far this season, with Thomas Tuchel preferring to opt for Thiago Silva and new signing Kalidou Koulibaly as part of his back three.

With Chelsea also linked with a move for Wesley Fofana from Leicester and a sensational move for Harry Maguire from Manchester United, Chalobah’s chances of playing in the first team at Stamford Bridge are looking increasingly slim. And according to the evening standardSpurs have joined Serie A sides Roma and Inter Milan in expressing interest in Chalobah.

Relations between Chelsea and Tottenham aren’t exactly friendly at the moment after last weekend’s fiery London derby saw Tuchel and Conte nearly come to blows in a furious fight on the touchline. And it seems unlikely that the Blues are willing to help a direct rival for a top-four spot by allowing Chalobah to come their way.

The England U-21 international has come through the ranks at Chelsea and has a contract that runs until 2026, meaning the Stamford Bridge side are in a strong position when it comes to demanding a fee high for his player.

Tuchel has shown his appreciation for Chalobah’s talents in the past and said in November last year: “His consistency [has impressed me]. He can produce the same performance in different games at this young age. It’s a new challenge for him to be a Chelsea regular.

“He was very strong in pre-season, showed no nerves and when it was the first start he played in the Super Cup. It was impressive because he did what he did in friendlies. That’s what I really like about him. He does his thing and he’s not affected in the moment by too much praise or the pressure that can come from the spectators.”

Chelsea will be next in action on Sunday when they take on Leeds, and it will be interesting to see if Chalobah plays a part in the game given the speculation over his future. Tottenham, meanwhile, face Wolves and are missing out on one of their key defensive stars with Cristian Romero on the sidelines with a muscle injury.
