The elections to the world chess body were held during the FIDE Congress, which is being held here along with the 44th Chess Olympiad.
Having an illustrious career during which he won several titles and honours, Chennai’s Anand has cut down on his tournament game in recent times and focused on coaching.
He rose to prominence as a teenager and became India’s first Grandmaster to win a world junior title, and has since led the country at a global level in chess.
He also won five world titles with the final World Rapid title in 2017.
He is not a part of the team that plays for the Olympiads but is a mentor to the Indian team.
He has also expressed his desire to do something for the sport as an administrator and has supported the work done by Dvorkovic and his team in the first stint.
Ahead of the elections, Dvorkovic spoke of keeping Anand in his team.
“I am really proud that Anand is running for Vice President. He is a great man and a great personality. He has been a friend for a long time.
“Already, he is extremely popular around the world. Not only in this state, wherever I go, his personality and contributions are acknowledged and recognized as a huge part of FIDE history and FIDE future. We have A really good team.”
