Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand was on Sunday elected vice-president of the game’s world governing body FIDE, while current president Arkady Dvorkovic was re-elected for a second term. Five-time world champion Anand was part of Dvorkovic’s team. Dvorkovi received 157 votes against 16 by his rival Andrey Baryshpolets, while the invalid vote count was 1 and the abstention was 5.

The elections to the world chess body were held during the FIDE Congress, which is being held here along with the 44th Chess Olympiad.

Having an illustrious career during which he won several titles and honours, Chennai’s Anand has cut down on his tournament game in recent times and focused on coaching.

He rose to prominence as a teenager and became India’s first Grandmaster to win a world junior title, and has since led the country at a global level in chess.

He also won five world titles with the final World Rapid title in 2017.

He is not a part of the team that plays for the Olympiads but is a mentor to the Indian team.

He has also expressed his desire to do something for the sport as an administrator and has supported the work done by Dvorkovic and his team in the first stint.

Ahead of the elections, Dvorkovic spoke of keeping Anand in his team.
