India’s star batsman Shubman Gill disclosed an incident in which he was touched by the gesture shown by M S Dhoni, In a recent interview, Gill recalled his India debut which came in the year 2019. It was India’s fourth ODI of the five-match series against New Zealand in Hamilton with the visitors batting first. Gill, who came to bat at number three, scored only 9 runs before getting out. While Gill had a forgettable debut, the Indian team also had a poor performance as they were bundled out for 92 runs. New Zealand achieved this target easily in 14.4 overs with 8 wickets remaining.

Gill was unhappy with his performance and India’s defeat to New Zealand. This is where MS Dhoni cheered him on.

“The day I made my debut, the team was all out for 90 (92) and I was out for 15 (9). I went out feeling sad that I scored only 9 runs on my debut and India lost the match. Was sitting. So, Mahi bhai came and saw that I was very sad. I was around 18 to 19 then. He told me ‘at least your debut was better than mine’. Then he started laughing and joking and I was touched by that gesture,” Gill said on the show ‘Dil Diyan Gallan’ hosted by Sonam Bajwa.

Significantly, MS Dhoni was dismissed on a golden duck in his first international match. It was an ODI against Bangladesh in Chattogram.

Talking about Gill, he has been selected for India’s T20 and three-match ODI series against New Zealand. He is also included in the squad announced for the two-match Test series against Bangladesh.
