Airlines want you to be excited. No, not by delays, understaffing, and the decimation of customer service.

They would like you to move ahead of the vast possibilities that the future holds for you. No, no on-time flights, lots of staff and instant customer service.

Instead, they would like you to be moved by how wonderful travel will be in the future. An indefinite time in the future, that is.

Why Delta is promising it may have free Wi-Fi that actually works. Soon.

Meanwhile, American Airlines tried to make a big impact last week by announcing he is investing in 20 wonderful new planes. Supersonic planes that will transport you from Miami to London in just five hours.

Created by a fancy-named company called Boom, these planes – when they actually exist, that is – promise to fly extremely fast on sustainable aviation fuel. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to have an engine yet.

Boom plans to fly in 2026, and American isn’t even the first major airline to have announcement his participation. United have already placed a deposit on 50 Boom Overtures.

It all sounds very exciting. For those who have survived long enough, they might remember that Air France and British Airways flew something called the Concorde across the Atlantic in the last century. It wasn’t the most comfortable plane, but it got you to New York from London very quickly.

Surely everyone would rather spend less time on a plane than more.

You would think, then, that every airline would jump on this supersonic PR machine to boost its self-image.

Yet here is Delta CEO Ed Bastian narrative fox business“I still have a lot more questions than answers. Until we’re confident that we can actually generate a reliable return from the aircraft, that’s not where we’re investing.”

It’s fascinating that he’s honest enough to get away with the money. It seems like so long ago that Delta’s image was one of innovation, reliability and customer service. His recent abject skid rather spoiled that. Perhaps he is now trying to appear responsible and even chastened.

Also: A United Airlines pilot gave a grand speech to passengers. not everyone is going to like it

I fear, however, that Bastian is also making a bit of a mockery of competitors who are desperately trying to deliver positive news when there is so little for the airlines to do.

Don’t look at the mess we’ve made here; look at that bright future there.

You can imagine, however, that America’s own pilots are eager to fly in a Boom. This would surely represent the pinnacle of their racing careers.

Well, the Allied Pilots Association pilots’ union couldn’t contain themselves. He rushed to Twitter and Free enthusiastic words from Captain Denis Tajer, his spokesman.

“It doesn’t matter which plane you book,” Tajer said. “Whether moving at the speed of sound or subsonic, a cancellation is a cancellation.”

It might not be so easy to turn everyone on after all.
