Google Wear OS may get smartwatch backup support when switching to a new device: report

As more Wear OS devices have started entering the market, US tech giant Google’s efforts to improve the overall experience on Android devices have been revealed in the latest APK teardown of its Play app. Services.

According to an app teardown by XDA-Developers, new strings in the 22.32.12 beta version of the Google Play Services application revealed that the company is preparing to add support for saving smartwatch data when switching to a new device.

One of the strings was titled: “companion_backup_opt_in_title”, which contained the prompts: “Back up your device with Google One / Backup by Google One / Choose a backup account”.

Currently, when changing Wear the operating system smartwatch to a new Android smartphone, users need to factory reset the watch. Adding an option to back up the device would make this a much smoother experience.

What’s interesting is the mention of Google One, a paid Google subscription. Settings and management of Google device data backups for Android and iOS can be found in the Google One app, although a Google One subscription is not required to use the feature.

Google One subscribers pay for additional storage space in their Google Account so that Google doesn’t put a feature like this behind a paywall, according to the report.
