Hand of Fate Developers Announce Capes, a Superhero Tactical RPG

Several key team members from the now-defunct Hand of Fate developer, Defiant Development have formed a new studio called Spitfire Interactive and announced a debut game, a superhero tactical RPG called Capes.

The turn-based strategy will be released in the first quarter of 2023 on PC (via Steam) and aims to deliver a gritty take on the superhero genre by placing players in a world ruled by supervillains. Different combinations of heroes and their powers need to be utilized in order to overcome each situation, which range from rescuing citizens from fallen debris to taking down powerful baddies.

“Return to the Golden Age where heroes saved the day for fame and glory and villains concocted schemes in glorified games of cops and robbers… until it wasn’t fun anymore,” the plot synopsis reads.

“One dark day, the villains truly won, brutally wiping humanity’s protectors off the face of the planet. After nearly two decades of villains running the world and instilling a fear of superpowers, a new generation of heroes are ready to stop the filth of crime from spreading or die trying.”

Capes also places a strong focus on diversity in both the superpowers available – which range from super speed to crystal manipulation – and the heroes themselves, with the roster featuring a variety of different ethnicities and genders.

“I started my career writing on Freedom Force alongside Ken Levine, so this feels like a return to where my journey began,” said Morgan Jaffit, director of Spitfire Interactive and founder of previous studio Defiant Development. “My team and I want to explore the darker side of every coin and we have the best people possible to do it.”

Defiant shut down in 2019 following the release of several mobile games plus Hand of Fate and its sequel, both of which proved standout games for the developer (with IGN saying Hand of Fate 2 was great).

Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelancer. He’ll talk about The Witcher all day.
