Although I never considered myself a bibliophile as a young adult, when I got my first Kindle years ago, I found myself unable to put it down.
A Kindle is a great way to carry all your books in one package. A handy device, lighter than a tablet and relatively inexpensive, the Kindle makes it easy to buy, borrow and protect your books.
How to Share or Loan a Kindle Book
There are two easy ways to share a Kindle book: by lending it to someone else or by sharing it through your Family Library. We’ll cover both options, so you can choose the one that suits your needs.
Loan of a Kindle book
There are books that you can lend to other users after purchasing them. Unfortunately, many do not support loans. The publisher sets loan terms for their books, so the length of the loan varies, but is often around 14 days. If the book is not accepted for loan within seven days, it will be returned to you.
Step 1: Access your Amazon account
Use the mobile app or a web browser to sign in to your Amazon account, then go to your account settings by clicking Account and Lists at the top right of the page.
Step 2: Click Content & Devices
Go in Content and Devices on Amazon; this will give you access to your purchased device settings and content like books, apps, videos and music.
Step 3: Select books
Select Books of your available content. This will bring up a list of your purchased and borrowed books.
Step 4: Find the book you want to share and click More Shares
The list of your purchased books has options for each on the right side of the page. Clicking on More actions displays options in a drop-down menu.
Step 5: If your book is loanable, click Loan this title
On the More actions menu, click Lend this title to lend it to someone else. Next, you’ll be prompted to fill out a form with the recipient’s information:
Not all books can be loaned, so if yours doesn’t have the Lend this title option, there’s the option to try sharing it through your family library.
Sharing with the family library
Another option for sharing a book is through Family Library. This can be done in the same actions menu that you access by following steps 1-4 above.
Step 6: Under More Actions, click Manage Family Library
If there isn’t Lend this title option in the More Actions drop-down menu, click Manage the family library In place.
Step 7: Select someone to share the book with
Your Family Library includes members of your Amazon household.
When you select someone to share the book with, click the yellow Make changes button to share the book with them. You can add or remove books from your Family Library at any time.
