Telegram only needs a few paying subscribers to cover costs, says founder Pavel Durov

The Telegram messaging app, used by a wide range of Russian and Ukrainian officials during the war, only needs a small number of paying subscribers to cover its costs, its founder Pavel Durov said on Tuesday.

Premium Telegram service users will get a higher limit for chats, media and file downloads, Durov said on June 10, noting that paid subscriptions would ensure the app remains funded primarily by users and not advertisers.

“The beauty of Telegram Premium is that if only 2.5% to 3% of our users subscribe to this subscription, Telegram will cover its costs, borne only by its users,” he said on Telegram tuesday.

“It will herald a new user-centric era in the history of social media services.”

Telegram and Signal signed up more email users due to growing privacy concerns over a bigger rival WhatsAppproperty of Metaplatforms. Telegram has 500 million monthly active users and is one of the top 10 most downloaded apps in the world, according to its website.

Telegram Premium – the paid subscription that brings additional functionality to the messaging app – has started deployment to users. The premium tier grants users access to file downloads up to 4GB, faster downloads, and the ability to convert voicemail to text. Along with the launch of the paid subscription, Telegram has introduced a list of improvements for all users of the platform, including those who do not purchase the premium tier. The Dubai-based company also announced that it now has over 700 million monthly active users.

In India, Telegram Premium is available at Rs. 469 per month on the iPhone. The price of the premium subscription on Android has not yet been announced. It is likely that the company would opt for a phased approach by country.
