Amid battle with government, Imran Khan tells army to review policies

Earlier, former Prime Minister Imran Khan said Pakistan was becoming a ‘banana republic’.

Islamabad:

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday called on the country’s military establishment to “review its policies” while saying he would rather die than accept the Shehbaz Sharif government.

The warning comes as Pakistan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader is embroiled in a battle with the ruling coalition, which he says came to power as a result of a US-backed plot against him.

Addressing a seminar in Islamabad, the PTI leader said political stability was the precondition for economic development and neither could be achieved without free and fair elections.

“I want to ask neutrals today, do you know where the country is going?” The Dawn newspaper quoted Khan as saying. “How can the country and the economy progress when you don’t even know what will happen in the next 2-3 months,” asked Imran Khan.

The former prime minister, who has fallen out of favor with Pakistan’s military, said the “right decisions” had to be made immediately regarding the country’s current political situation.

“No matter how many times you call yourself neutral, history will blame you for what you have done with the country,” he said.

Pak’s former prime minister warned there was still time to “review policies”. According to Dawn, Imran said decisions made behind closed doors were not in Pakistan’s best interest.

This warning to the country’s military establishment comes a day after Imran Khan said Pakistan was “turning into a banana republic”. This comment follows the controversy surrounding the arrest of PTI leader Shahbaz Gill.

Gill was arrested by police on August 9, after making controversial comments on television against the Pakistani military, deemed “highly hateful and seditious” by the country’s media authorities.

Imran Khan’s party alleged that Gill had previously been tortured in police custody and that his life was still in danger.

“To descend into a banana republic. The civilized world will be shocked at our levels of barbarism. The worst thing is that an easy target has been chosen to set an example through torture and without a fair trial,” Imran Khan tweeted. with the video. de Gill taken to hospital.

“Meanwhile, people like NS, Maryam, MFR, AZ, all of whom have in the worst way and repeatedly attacked state institutions with malicious and targeted statements against them, get away with it without even a hint of reprimand,” he said in another tweet.
