At least 15 dead in Thai nightclub fire

Flammable acoustic foams on the walls of the club accelerated the fire.

The victims of a massive fire that ravaged a Thai nightclub rose to 15 on Saturday, an emergency service said.

The fire broke out around 01:00 (18:00 GMT Thursday) at Mountain B nightclub in Sattahip district, Chonburi province, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) southeast of Bangkok.

The Sawang Rojanathammasathan Rescue Foundation said on Saturday another man had died, bringing the death toll to 15.

Most of the other dead – four women and 10 men – were found huddled near the entrance and in the bathroom, their bodies badly burned, the service said.

They were between 17 and 49 years old. They are believed to be all Thai.

Some relatives of the victims traveled to Bangkok to collect the bodies of their loved ones after examination by forensic experts.

Flammable acoustic foam on the walls of the club accelerated the blaze and it took firefighters more than three hours to bring it under control, emergency services said on Friday.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha has ordered an investigation into the tragedy.

Police said on Friday they were investigating reports that some of the nightclub’s doors were locked at the time of the fire.
