Brexit warning: Rishi Sunak promises Tory members he will see Keir Starmer | Politics | New

The Tory leadership race has entered a critical phase as the party’s 160,000 members begin receiving their ballots as they are asked to choose between former Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss. In a leaflet seen by, Mr Sunak promised to “secure Brexit” and “win the next election campaign by defeating Starmer’s Labor Party”. The MP for Richmond, who was first elected to the House of Commons in 2015, currently trails Ms Truss in opinion polls among Conservative Party members.

However, a recent survey by IPSOS found that Sunak is more likely to be seen as having what it takes to be a good prime minister compared to Truss and is tied with Starmer.

The Brexit-friendly former chancellor also focused his leaflet on controlling inflation just days after the Bank of England warned that the consumer price index could hit 13% by the end of 2022.

He said, “This is a critical moment for our country, a critical moment for our Party. A moment that requires serious leadership.

“Because you just have to think of the alternative. An economy where inflation is spiraling out of control.

“And a general election result that sees a Labor-led coalition backed by the Liberal Democrats and the SNP.

“A coalition that would conspire to overturn the result of the European referendum.

“A coalition that would destroy the economy, abandon our values, erase our history and destroy the Union.”

Sir Keir promised to keep the UK out of the Brussels single market and customs union during a speech at the Economic Reform Center last month.

However, a Eurosceptic campaigner has warned that the Opposition Leader, who was a key supporter of holding a second referendum when he was Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Brexit Secretary, could backtrack on his promise in exchange for the support of the Liberal Democrats or the SNP.

They said“If he needed to get into a coalition with the Liberal Democrats or even worse the SNP, they could extract that [concessions on Brexit] as the price he is willing to pay.

Ms Truss added: “I will lead a government that will bring the change we need to the economy, I will cut taxes from day one, unlock the huge opportunities of Brexit and undertake the bold economic reforms needed to grow the world. ‘economy.”

The Foreign Secretary also reiterated that she would scrap Mr Sunak’s National Insurance increase and cut corporation tax.

Despite leading among Conservative Party members, a Labor insider suggested that Mr Sunak may pose a much bigger problem for Starmer.

Southside’s source said“As far as the Conservatives are concerned, we are significantly more worried about a party led by Sunak, with Truss not a major concern at this stage in the polls.

“He is seen as the most classic Tory who will master the economy, although if he wins we plan to go on the attack after recess to make people realize he was the man who looked after of the economy as everything went wrong.”

In a slight nudge to Ms Truss, the source added: ‘We are always aware of the Brexit effect and the populist big names she has behind her; but also her endorsements of Tom Tugendhat and Ben Wallace are concerning because it is rationalized by these kinds of names.”
