It’s part of that of Beijing furious reaction to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan on Wednesday. China The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced that it was stopping exchanges with the United States on the prevention of cross-border crime and drug trafficking.
It’s a move that Washington called “irresponsible.”
In response to Ms Pelosi’s visit to the self-governing island that China considers its territory, Beijing on Thursday launched military drills at sea and in the sky.
China’s largest drills in the Taiwan Strait are scheduled to continue until noon Sunday.
On Friday, Taiwan’s defense ministry said it had dispatched jets to warn Chinese planes that had entered the island’s air defense zone.
Some of the planes had crossed the center line of the Taiwan Strait, an unofficial buffer zone that separates the two sides.
The ministry said 68 Chinese military aircraft and 13 navy ships were present in the strait.
China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Eastern Theater Command said in a statement that it had conducted air and sea exercises “to test the troops’ joint combat capabilities”.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken argued that Washington had repeatedly let Beijing know it did not want to create a crisis over Ms Pelosi’s visit.
“We will fly, navigate and operate wherever international law permits,” he said.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told a press briefing that Washington should not act “hastily” and cause a bigger crisis.
He said: “I heard that US Secretary of State Blinken held his press conference and spread misinformation and was not speaking honestly.
“We want to issue a warning to the United States: do not act lightly, do not create a greater crisis.”
Jing Quan, a senior official at the Chinese Embassy in Washington, said the United States should act immediately and apologize for Pelosi’s visit.
He said, “The only way out of this crisis is for the US side to take action immediately to rectify its mistakes and eliminate the grave impact of Pelosi’s visit.”
