New York:

The Indian Consulate General in New York on Friday strongly condemned the vandalism of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi outside a Hindu temple in New York and raised the issue with US authorities to ensure that those responsible for “the despicable action” are held accountable.

In a possible hate crime, unidentified people smashed a homemade statue of Mahatma Gandhi with a hammer at the Hindu temple in Queens after vandalizing it earlier this month.

The consulate said in a statement that it “strongly condemns the vandalism of the Mahatma Gandhi statue outside a temple in Queens, New York. .”

Surveillance video showed a person hitting a statue of Mahatma Gandhi with a sledgehammer on Tuesday, before smashing his head in and knocking it over, according to CBS News.

Minutes later, a group of six people took turns stomping on and pounding the statue before taking off.

The New York Police Department is investigating both incidents as possible hate crimes, according to media reports.
