A 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan killed at least 1,000 people on Wednesday. Additionally, more than 600 people were injured by the earthquake which, according to the US Geological Survey (USGC), struck about 44 km from Khost, a town near the Pakistani border.

Reports and photographs from news agencies show buildings reduced to rubble and injured people treated and transported by helicopter. With entire villages flattened, footage also shows people rescuing those trapped under the rubble, wrapping them in blankets for safety.

Video shared by Reuters news agency also shows several people covered in blankets and being airlifted from earthquake-affected areas.

In addition to rescuing the injured, helicopters are also used to transport medical supplies and food, Reuters quoted Interior Ministry official Salahuddin Ayubi.

The death toll, as well as the number of injured, is expected to continue to rise as reports arrive from remote villages in the mountains, agency added.

Confirming the death toll, Paktika’s director of information and culture, Mohammad Amin Hozaifa told Reuters, “1,000 dead, 1,500 injured, and that number could increase, many families have been lost. the wounded were taken to Kabul and inrez.

Most of the deaths have been reported in the eastern province of Paktika. While Paktika saw up to 255 dead, over 200 were injured. Khost, on the other hand, saw 25 dead and 90 injured.

Wednesday’s earthquake would be the deadliest since 2002.
