China has stepped up military exercises in Taiwanese waters and imposed sanctions on Nancy Pelosi after the 82-year-old became the first Speaker of the House to visit the island in 25 years. Beijing called Ms Pelosi’s visit a “gross interference” in internal affairs.
However, the White House has warned that subsequent military exercises “increase the risk of miscalculation.”
A spokesperson said: “These activities constitute a significant escalation in China’s efforts to change the status quo.
“They are provocative, irresponsible and increase the risk of miscalculation.
“They are also at odds with our long-standing goal of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, which the world has come to expect.”
The spokesperson’s comments echoed Antony Blinken’s remarks.
The secretary of state called Beijing’s military response “blatantly provocative.”
Taipei has claimed up to 14 Chinese military vessels having conducted exercises around the Taiwan Strait.
The United States and other Western allies have also condemned the People’s Liberation Army for firing missiles.
