Liz Truss refuses to rule out ending legal ties over Rwanda flights | Politics | New

In heated exchanges, Ms Cherry demanded that Ms Truss rule out quitting the ECHR.

She said: “When I headed the Joint Human Rights Committee in Strasbourg last week, I was repeatedly told that threats by the UK to withdraw or even disengage from the European Convention on Human Rights risked coming to the aid of Eastern European states, including Russia, which do not have the same respect for human rights and the rule of right that the UK has always had.

“So will he tell the prime minister to tone down his veiled threats to the convention and his most exciting backbenchers to back down?”

Ms Truss however popped the question, highlighting how the UK has led the way with Russia.

The Foreign Secretary replied: “Honestly, I thought the honorable lady would be happy that the UK was the first to kick Russia out of the Council of Europe and hold it to account.”

But she did not comment on the UK’s continued involvement with the ECHR.

It comes after the Prime Minister acknowledged the UK could walk away after the court overruled the UK Supreme Court and blocked a flight to Rwanda of illegal immigrants.

The ECHR did not hold a hearing and did not even publish the name of the judge or judges who rendered the decision.

Home Secretary Priti Patel, who is trying to break the business model of human traffickers by relocating asylum seekers to Rwanda, called the decision “outrageous”.

The government is trying to stop the flow of thousands of illegal migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats.

They are trafficked by smugglers who use the trafficking of human goods to finance organized crime and terrorism.
