Royal commentator Daniela Elser highlighted how journalist Matthew Syed revealed the Duchess of Cambridge had a chat with her young son as he waited outside the toilets on a train en route to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this week. Meanwhile, the Duke smiled as he posed for a selfie with fans as he watched swimming with Kate and Princess Charlotte.
Ms Elser described both moments as “deeply illuminating”.
The columnist also said they ‘help underline’ biographer Tom Bower’s claim in his new book that the Duchess of Sussex’s ‘expectations of royal life were at an often unglamorous world removed from reality’ .
Writing for news.com.au, Ms Elser said: ‘Now these two cases could be filed under ‘Aw, aren’t they lovely? examples of two people who might be destined for coronations and crowns but didn’t let their high status turn their heads.
“But all of this comes after the publication of Tom Bower’s Revenge: Meghan, Harry And The War Between The Windsors, a frontal 464-page dismantling of Harry and Meghan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
“And the stories of William and Kate this week?” These two simple and brief interactions with the public?
“Well, they help underline one of her main points, which was that Meghan’s expectations of royal life were far removed from the often unglamorous reality.
“Think, more polite chatter in front of public restrooms than private jets and Pol Roger.”
In his book, Mr Bower claimed Meghan ‘confused being famous with being a king’ but ‘the royal world should be one of selflessness, history, tradition and quiet patronage without personal gain’.
Ms Elser added: “At the end of the day, what William and Kate seem to fundamentally understand is that royalty isn’t the same as fame; it’s not about special treatment, favorable seats or four-digit accessories that find their way into your wardrobe, free of charge.
“It is a tedious devotion to duty, however repetitive or boring it often is.”
Mr Bower makes a series of claims in his book that cover the divide between the Sussexes and the Royal Family.
Previous books by the provocative biographer have featured Boris Johnson, Jeremy Corbyn, Charles, Tony Blair and Richard Branson, among others.
Speaking last month, Mr Bower insisted Meghan would read his unauthorized biography.
Asked by host Christine Lampard about ITV’s Lorraine, the investigative writer replied: “Of course she will read it, I’m sure she can’t resist.”
On whether he considers it a ‘failure’ if the subjects of his controversial biographies don’t sue him, Mr Bower laughed and said: ‘I don’t mind if they sue as long as ‘they’re losing. So far, thank God, they’ve lost.
“I think if Meghan sues she won’t want to appear in court to be cross-examined by my lawyer. So it’s best that she doesn’t prosecute.”
It comes as Meghan and Prince Harry live in California after stepping down from royal duties in 2020.
