GCHQ chief Jeremy Fleming laid bare Putin’s struggles in an article he wrote for The Economist, adding that misinformation is a big part of Moscow’s war machine.

He wrote: “Until now, President Putin has completely lost the information war in Ukraine and the West.

“While this is cause for celebration, we should not underestimate how Russian disinformation is playing out elsewhere in the world.

“As with its ground invasion, Russia’s initial online plans appear to have failed.

“The country’s use of offensive cyber tools has been irresponsible and indiscriminate.”

The Kremlin is known to have used a similar strategy during conflicts in the Balkans and Syria.

Mr Fleming added that Russia had deployed WhisperGate malware to interfere with and destroy Kyiv government systems.

He also said that the UK’s National Cyber ​​Force could retaliate in Moscow with a military unit using offensive cyber tools.

He also called for new sanctions against the Kremlin targeting its nuclear industry.

Kyiv and Moscow blame each other for the escalation of violence in the region.
