Seeking to highlight the differences between herself and her rival, Ms Truss has repeatedly admitted that she is not the smoothest politician.

She told Tory members during the hustings: “I’m not the most adept presenter – but I’m someone for whom what you see is what you get.”

He added: “Keep your hair and your hypocrisy to yourself.”
