Texas school where 21 people were killed in mass shooting will be demolished: mayor

The Texas school shooting is one of the worst mass shootings in US history.

Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, where a gunman killed 19 students and two teachers will be torn down, the school’s mayor said. The BBC reported that the mayor, Don McLaughlin, made the announcement during a council meeting on Tuesday, during which residents demanded answers about the shooting.

He did not, however, specify a date for the demolition of the school, the outlet added.

“It is my understanding – and I had this discussion with the superintendent – that the school will be demolished. You can never ask a child to return or a teacher to return to this school,” Mr McLaughlin said, cited by the BBC.

The mass shooting, one of the worst in America, took place on May 24. Local police faced public anger, with parents accusing cops of waiting an hour before entering the school and killing the shooter – 18-year-old Salvador Ramos.

Steve McCraw, Texas public safety chief, told state senators investigating the handling of the tragedy that police had enough officers and equipment to arrest the shooter within minutes of entering the scene. school.

But instead they waited almost an hour and 15 minutes to face Ramos as he led his attack.

“The only thing stopping the Corridor of Dedicated Officers from entering Rooms 111 and 112 was the on-scene commander, who decided to put the lives of the officers ahead of the lives of the children,” McCraw said.

Ramos continued to rain bullets on students in Class 4 after entering the school as police waited outside. Horrifying details later emerged on the site of the mass shooting, which spoke of some students play dead to survive.

Uvalde’s police chief, however, defended the action and blamed the delay on a hard to find key.

Robb Elementary won’t be the first school to be demolished after a mass shooting. In 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut was flattened after more than two dozen students and staff were killed in a similar incident.
