Kyiv said on Friday its forces recaptured a village in the eastern Donetsk region and territory around another war-scarred city, as Moscow proxies staged votes on Russian annexation.
“The Ukrainian army has taken over the village of Yatskivka in the Donetsk region,” Oleksiy Gromov, a senior army official, told reporters.
Kyiv forces have “regained control of positions south of Bakhmut”, Gromov added.
Yatskivka sits on the eastern bank of the strategic Oskil River, which Kyiv forces crossed after retaking swathes of territory in neighboring Kharkiv region.
Bakhmut, a key town with a pre-war population of 70,000, is also located in the Donetsk region and has been under Russian attack for months. Moscow’s forces have so far failed to capture it.
The Donetsk region and three other Ukrainian provinces fully or partially controlled by Russia – Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia – are holding votes on whether to be annexed by Moscow.
The ballots were dismissed as a ‘sham’ by Kyiv and its Western allies
